Tailoring your CV is about highlighting the parts of your resume that best fit the job description. It is important to target your CV to a particular role to stand out from the competitive market. Employers want to see how your skills and experience match the specific role they’ve advertised. Tailoring your CV will show employers you’re a serious applicant, and that you really want to work for them.
- Read the job description carefully
Please read the job description from beginning to end, thoroughly. And then read it again. Make sure you are fully understand and aware of what the employer is looking for and what the role requires.
- Pick out some special keywords and phrases from the Position Description
Showcase keywords and specific skills listed in the job description and include them in your CV. For instance, if the job description for Business Analyst asks for ‘good communication skills and stakeholder management’, make sure you get those words in there somewhere.
- Summary of Experience
Summary of experience is the best way to capture the attention of the hiring manager and convince him or her of your suitability for the role.
Highlight what skills and experience the hiring manager is looking for? Why you are the best match for the job. Lots of roles require soft skills like the ability to work in a team, interpersonal skills, communication skills and organisational skills.
- Put your most relevant experience first
Tailoring your resume is about making the skills and experience you have appear to the best advantage – so make the most relevant parts of your CV the most visible. For example, if the advertisement highlighted that the successful candidate would be ‘process-driven’, and you have an example where you have created and implemented a new process with a positive outcome, ensure that appears first. Always be truthful. If you don’t have a particular skill or attribute, don’t list it.
- Research the company
Don’t just read the job description – research the company itself as well.
In last, I can say this might sounds like a lot of work require, but once you’ve got in the habit of tailoring your CV it will become an easy and fast step in the job application process. You don’t need to start from scratch every time.
